' ADVENTURE DIRT BIKE RIDING CAPE YORK   G.R.O.W.L. - “Geriatric Riders Of the Weipa Locality”. We are a non-incorporated association; all members that ride are licensed and ride registered dirt bikes. We strive to promote a responsible attitude to the environment and Adventure Dirt Bike Riding. We are affiliated with the DSMRA. Visiting riders to Weipa are welcome to contact the club for any assistance with tracks, possible routes and itineraries, bike repairs and maintenance, maps and general info on riding Cape York. We support the RFDS whenever possible and offer our services to the SES for use in ground area searches. We meet monthly at member’s abodes, advertised in the local newspaper each week where we partake in refreshments and discuss all manner of subjects relating to dirt bikes, riding them or at least trying to. We have a President, Bookman and a “Tail Twister”- he’s a member nominated to tally up all misdemeanours – imagined or real, it doesn’t matter you get fined regardless. You don’t have to be a ‘Jerry Hat Trick’ to join G.R.O.W.L. by the way.  Most members own and ride a dirt bike, some own them and don’t ride them, some don’t own them at all, and some like to do the support thing in a 4WD – all of the above ‘Somes’ and possibly a few not even thought of yet are fine! The advice given to all members is – ride at your own pace, no one gets left behind, the corner man system we utilise on rides ensures all are mobile and heading in the correct direction, well nearly always anyway, a comprehensive first aid kit and EPIRB accompanies us on all our rides. Any member can put forward a proposed ride of any distance, destination or duration of his desire, he can organise the ride himself or call on others in the club for assistance–there are very few destinations on Cape York we have not ridden to at one time or another. Day rides make up the majority of rides on the G.R.O.W.L. calendar each year, overnighters, multi - day bike only rides and weekender vehicle supported rides occur regularly. Each year an extended duration, two to three week bike only ride takes place to some awe inspiring geographic location or some spectacular event in Australia somewhere. Due to the numerous work patterns and commitments, these rides can sometimes involve only a couple of riders or it can be all members fronting up ready to rock and roll.
