The Building
The Western Cape Cultural Centre was established in a building formerly known as the 'Stubby Hut' on the edge of the Embley River and overlooking the Port of Weipa. The traditional name for the Evans Landing are in the Alngith language is Achimbun. The Alngith people's lands cover all of the Weipa Peninsula, including the Achimbun area.
The building was owned by Comalco and used as a wet canteen for the Evans Landing construction camp. The Centre is situated on Ports Corporation of Queensland harbour tenure. The Centre building was an architect-designed, cyclone-proof construction developed by Comalco in 1978. It has sweeping views of the river and lends itself very well to its new purpose.
